Your first appointment at Techno-Dent Clinic is set up to be clear, calm, and practical. This guide explains what to bring, how long to allow, and what happens from check-in to aftercare.

First Visit Guide

Arriving for Your First Appointment in Sandton

When you arrive at our Sandton practice, our team will welcome you and confirm your details before the clinical part of the visit starts. If you are coming from Bryanston, Rivonia, Morningside, Fourways or Rosebank, it is best to allow extra travel time for traffic, especially during peak morning and late afternoon hours.

Please arrive a little early so there is time to complete your forms, discuss your concerns, and settle in. If you are a new patient, the first visit usually takes longer than a standard follow-up because we need a full picture of your oral health, previous dental work, and any current discomfort.

What to Bring With You on the Day

A good first visit starts with the right paperwork and a clear list of concerns. If you have recent dental records, X-rays, medical aid details, or medication information, bring those along. This helps us plan your care properly and avoid delays.

  • South African ID, passport, or other valid identification
  • Medical aid details, if applicable
  • List of current medication and allergies
  • Previous dental records or recent X-rays if available
  • Any referral letters or treatment notes from another practice
  • A written list of questions or symptoms you want to discuss

If you have a specific concern such as tooth pain, crowding, staining, missing teeth, or a chipped filling, write it down before you leave home. It is easy to forget details once you are in the chair.

How We Assess Your Smile and Oral Health

Your first consult is not rushed. We begin by listening to what you want to improve and what has been bothering you. Then we do a clinical examination that may include checking gums, teeth, bite alignment, old restorations, and any areas that need closer attention.

For some patients we may use digital imaging to get a detailed view of the teeth and jaw. This supports planning for cosmetic dentistry, implants, orthodontic assessments, or general treatment. If you are interested in digital smile design, we will discuss how the process works and what can realistically be achieved for your mouth and your budget.

In many cases, the first appointment also includes a treatment discussion. You will be told what we found, what can be done first, and what can wait. That way you know the next step before leaving the practice.

If You Need Urgent Dental Care Before the Visit

Some first appointments are booked because of pain, swelling, a broken tooth, or a lost filling. If that is your situation, tell us when you book and again when you arrive. We will focus on stabilising the problem first and then talk through the longer-term plan.

For emergency dentistry, avoid chewing on the affected side, keep the area clean, and bring any dislodged pieces with you if possible. If you are dealing with swelling, fever, or difficulty opening your mouth, do not wait for it to pass on its own. Get in touch as soon as possible so we can advise you on the safest next step.

  • Do not place aspirin directly on a sore tooth or gum
  • Use a cold compress on the outside of the cheek if there is swelling
  • Rinse gently with warm salt water if the area is sore
  • Keep broken restorations or crowns in a clean container

Planning for Cosmetic, Implant, or Orthodontic Treatment

If your first visit is about a smile change rather than pain relief, the appointment will focus on planning. Cosmetic consulting may include shape, shade, tooth proportions, and how your smile shows when you speak and laugh. Implant planning looks at the available bone, gum condition, and spacing. Orthodontic assessments consider crowding, bite, and whether teeth need guided movement over time.

We aim to explain the options clearly, including what needs to be done now and what can be phased in later. If sedation options are suitable for your case, these can also be discussed during planning so you know what to expect before any procedure is booked.

We work with patients from Sandton and nearby areas who want a practical plan, not guesswork. If you have questions about how long treatment may take or how visits can be spaced around work and school runs, ask us at this stage.

After the Visit: Costs, Follow-Up, and Next Steps

Before you leave, we will go over the next stage of treatment and any home care you should follow. If follow-up treatment is needed, we will help with booking and explain what time frame makes sense. Aftercare follow-ups are especially important after extractions, implant planning, orthodontic reviews, or any procedure that needs healing time.

Payment guidance is also available if you need help understanding what your medical aid may cover and what may be out of pocket. If you want a full treatment plan, it is better to ask for clarity early rather than leave it for later. That saves time and helps you plan properly.

If you experience unusual pain, swelling, bleeding, or a reaction after treatment, contact us without delay. Small issues are easier to manage when they are picked up early.

A Simple Checklist for a Smooth First Visit

Use this quick checklist before you leave home. It helps keep the visit efficient and reduces the chance of missing anything important.

  • Confirm your appointment time and allow extra travel time
  • Bring your ID and medical aid details
  • Pack a list of medication and allergies
  • Bring previous dental notes if you have them
  • Write down your main concern and questions
  • Eat lightly unless you were told otherwise
  • Arrange your diary for possible follow-up treatment

If you are unsure about anything before your first visit, just send us an email and we will guide you. A prepared first appointment makes the rest of your care much easier, whether you are here for preventive care, family dentistry, cosmetic planning, or a specific dental problem.

Techno-Dent Clinic is based in Sandton and sees patients from across Johannesburg. We are set up to make your first visit straightforward, and to help you understand exactly what comes next.

Questions we get asked

How long should I allow for my first visit?

Allow extra time for paperwork, an examination, and discussion of your treatment options. New patient visits usually take longer than routine check-ups.

Do I need X-rays for my first appointment?

Not always. If you have recent dental records or X-rays, bring them along. If more imaging is needed, we will advise you during the visit.

Can I come in for pain or a broken tooth on my first visit?

Yes. If you have pain, swelling, or a broken tooth, tell us when booking so we can prioritise emergency care and treatment planning.
